950 Claude Agents ran for 21 hours and found a biological system overlooked by humans
DONGCHA Beating AI news brief: Anthropic's self-built molecular biology laboratory has announced its first result. Human scientists gave Claude only one direction: search vast DNA datasets for new types of reverse transcriptases worth studying, namely enzymes that can write RNA information back into DNA. About 950 Claude Agents ran for 21 hours, screening more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases down to 3,500 candidate systems, and finally narrowing them to 20 key targets.
One Agent discovered that a strange reverse transcriptase was positioned next to extensive regularly repeated DNA that looked very much like CRISPR. CRISPR is a natural DNA defense system found in bacteria. Humans later adapted it into a gene-editing tool that can use RNA as a “guide” to locate and cut specific DNA. Claude then counted the repeat sequences, analyzed their spacing, compared them with known systems, and searched the literature, ultimately determining that this might conceal a biological system that had not previously been fully identified. Anthropic named it ART.
Human scientists subsequently verified the findings in the laboratory. ART is found mainly in bacteriophages, viruses that specifically infect bacteria. It consists of a reverse transcriptase, a neighboring protein with an unknown function, and a long series of repeated DNA. Experiments confirmed that these repeated DNA sequences produce multiple short RNA molecules. A small number of known systems with similar structures can cut, replicate, or rewrite DNA, so Anthropic is continuing to study whether ART has similar capabilities.
It is not yet known what ART actually does, and it cannot be said that it can already edit genes. The reverse transcriptase within it had been studied previously; Claude's new discovery was the complete association between it and the adjacent repeated DNA and unknown protein. Claude was also not instructed in advance to look for ART this time. Instead, it identified an anomaly among a large number of candidates, continued investigating it, and then handed the results to humans for experiments. Anthropic said that if this type of analysis were performed entirely by experts, it would typically take weeks to months.
