The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on October 9 arrested OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan. According to the criminal complaint, the device was discovered around September 30 and was plugged into the USB port on the back of a television, wrapped in toilet paper, with its contents encrypted; the installation took approximately September 28. Surveillance showed Alfozan appearing near the conference room multiple times before the device was discovered, but he had neither authorization to enter the room nor authorization to attend the relevant meetings, which typically involved confidential technical and strategic information. The complaint states that, before installing the device, Alfozan used an internal productivity tool to inquire about OpenAI’s office building addresses, conference rooms, room capacities, schedules, and meeting locations involving executives and external partners. A chatbot account associated with his spouse asked during September 24 to 30 how to make a continuous-recording device, add Wi-Fi connectivity, improve real-time listening, and encrypt the device’s SD card.
