Omarchy creator DHH Criticizes Chinese software as overly crude, naming WeChat, Alipay, and HarmonyOS

Beating Insights AI news flash: renowned developer DHH October 17 at a Shenzhen GOSIM conference introduced the Linux desktop system Omarchy that he developed, then attended a developer meetup with more than 500 registered participants.

The next day, he had just praised Huawei's MateBook Fold as a highly futuristic foldable computer, but that evening criticized Chinese software as overly crude, naming WeChat, Alipay, and HarmonyOS. He said he greatly admired China's AI models and hardware, but remained puzzled by its software design.DHH subsequently explained that the issues centered on interface aesthetics, workflows, and refinement of details. Examples included insufficient whitespace, inconsistent margins, abrupt page transitions, crude animations, and disorganized information architecture. He believes that major Silicon Valley apps remain clearly ahead in these areas.

Some internet users countered that WeChat and Alipay integrate numerous everyday services, including payments and transportation, reducing the inconvenience of switching among different apps, and that complex interfaces are therefore unavoidable.DHH disagreed, arguing that feature richness and refined design can fully coexist, and that there is no reason for super apps to be so crude.

Some commenters also noted that the complexity of domestic apps is related to monetization. Shake-to-open ads, loan portals, and short-video recommendations are continually encroaching on the original functional interfaces. One developer likened it to adding lending features to X and then stuffing a TikTok into Stripe.
