【Former Polish police officer charged in Zondacrypto case; police search last place its founder was seen before disappearing】
Polish prosecutors have charged a former police officer in the case of the collapsed crypto exchange Zondacrypto. On Tuesday, Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime (CBZC), acting on orders from the National Prosecutor’s Office’s organized-crime division, detained Artur K. He faces two charges: participation in an organized criminal group; and causing significant property losses to BitBay, BB Trade Estonia, and another entity, as well as aiding the misappropriation of entrusted property, aiding computer fraud, and money laundering. Prosecutors said that a search of his residence uncovered documents related to the exchange’s operations. He is being questioned as a suspect, and prosecutors will decide whether to apply for pretrial detention. Meanwhile, police in Katowice are searching and examining a fuel depot, the last place where Zondacrypto founder Sylwester Suszek was seen before disappearing in March 2022. The investigating prosecutor is taking part with expert witnesses and specialized forensic equipment. The case is being treated as unlawful deprivation of liberty rather than a missing-person case. Previously, one suspect was accused of removing a hard drive from a gas-station surveillance recorder. Suszek founded the exchange in Katowice in 2014, when it was called BitBay. In 2020, its registered office was moved to Estonia under BB Trade Estonia, and it was renamed Zondacrypto. It claimed to have 1.3 million customers, most of them Polish. The exchange froze withdrawals and went offline in April, and Estonia’s Financial Intelligence Unit revoked its operating license on June 29. At least five people have been charged since August, including former Polish Olympic Committee president Radosław P. All those who have responded publicly have denied the allegations, which have not yet been adjudicated by a court.
