Microsoft: North Korean hackers use AI bulk-generated phishing documents; fake recruitment and malicious code development have been deployed

BlockBeats reports that,October 30, according to Yonhap News Agency, a Microsoft Threat Intelligence 29 report released on the day shows that North Korean hacking groups are using artificial intelligence to accelerate cyberattacks against South Korean users, expanding from customized phishing documents, fake recruitment, and identity impersonation to malicious code development and software supply chain attacks.

Microsoft assessed the 8 North Korea-linked hacking groups’AI level of adoption: 3 have reached the highest of four levels, the “operationalized” stage, incorporating AI into their routine attack processes; another 4 are in the “accelerating” stage, and 1 are in the “expanding” stage. The report said that some groups this year 8–September customized more than 100 decoy documents for different targets, with cases of producing dozens in bulk within minutes. This year PDF there were also cases involving June 8 to 12 disguised companies sending fake recruitment invitations to 3 professionals in AI, blockchain, and cybersecurity.

In addition, Microsoft analyzed that North Korean hackers may use Cursor and other AI programming tools to assist with code generation, debugging, and evading detection; “Onyx Sleet” (known in South Korea as Andariel) and “Pearl Sleet,” subordinate to North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, have used the open-source October since late AI in actual operations, a penetration-testing framework ARTEX. Microsoft said that although these groups have used AI to increase attack speed and efficiency, they have not yet reached the stage of fully autonomous attacks, and recommended that enterprises strengthen job-applicant identity verification, phishing protection, and malicious code detection.
