OpenAI So many mathematical breakthroughs that there is not enough time to publish them, bringing in 3 Fields Medalists to review them
Dongcha Beating AI flash news,OpenAI has established a “Mathematics and AI Advisory Group,” hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.OpenAI said that a model still under internal research has solved 100 long-standing open problems spanning multiple areas of mathematics. The previously announced research on the Navier–Stokes Millennium Problem also came from this model.
Most of these results have not yet been made public. The advisory group will assess the importance of the results, how they should be released, and academic standards. Among the first 9 members are three Fields Medalists: Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, and Edward Witten.
Advisory group members do not accept OpenAI compensation, may publicly criticize OpenAI, and may independently publish recommendations. However, this group has no decision-making authority and will not participate in deciding the pace at which OpenAI advances its internal mathematical research.
This is also OpenAI’s direct response to recent dissatisfaction in the mathematical community. Previously, Tao Zhexuan, Deng Yu, Peter Scholze, and other 25 Fields Medalists jointly issued a statement saying that AI is treating solving major mathematical problems as benchmark and has already begun harming mathematical research. The statement acknowledged that large models have advanced rapidly in recent months and can already solve important unsolved problems in multiple fields, but said that mathematics places greater value on the new concepts, methods, and understanding that result from this work.
