【ECB launches digital EUR innovation project: exploring AI agentic payments and machine-to-machine transactions】

The European Central Bank (ECB) announced the launch of a new round of applications for its digital EUR innovation platform, inviting fintech companies, payment institutions, and other organizations to explore AI agentic participation in digital EUR payments. The project will be divided into practical testing and workshops on future applications. Practical testing will take place from 2027 to January in June, with participants developing functional prototypes for electronic receipts, multilateral transactions, conditional payments, and other features. The workshops will explore AI payments, micropayments, machine-to-machine transactions, and the application of the digital EUR in public services. In addition,ECB has selected 36 banks and payment institutions, including Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank, to participate in another digital 12 pilot lasting EUR months, scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. The final issuance of the digital EUR still requires EU legislation and a subsequent decision by the ECB.
