Instinct just said it would not do advertising, and has immediately begun to “select stores and products” for users
Beating AI news report: Personal Agent assistant Instinct has launched a new feature, Selections, bringing recommendations from human experts into personal Agents. The company will work with local chefs, designers, architects, travel guides, and others, asking them to select restaurants, travel itineraries, and products in fields they know well, after which Instinct will provide recommendations based on user preferences.
For example, when a user is looking for a restaurant, Instinct can refer to a list selected by local chefs; when the user wants to buy home goods, it can find options matching the user’s style and budget among products recommended by independent designers. Noah Shinn said they hope the quality of these recommendations will be significantly higher than that of ordinary internet searches and other chatbots.
Interestingly, Shinn explicitly opposed the advertising model in his first long-form public interview. He believes that personal Agents will hold substantial amounts of user information, and that if brands can pay an Agent to persuade users to buy things they did not originally want, conflicts of interest can easily arise. Instinct plans to let users use the service for free and charge commissions to merchants whose orders are brought in by the Agent.
Selections cannot yet be directly classified as advertising. Instinct has not said that merchants can pay to enter the recommendation list, nor has it disclosed whether these expert partners charge fees.
But if Instinct ultimately really makes money through transaction commissions, Selections will face a very practical question: will the things it recommends also be related to how much money it can make? Shinn did not explain this time.
