Federal Reserve Beige Book: High Oil Prices Hit the Entire U.S. 12 districts, with businesses expecting prices to rise further
BlockBeats reports that October 15, the Federal Reserve’s latest Beige Book showed that the U.S. economy continued to grow overall, but growth was weak in most sectors. 12 Of the Federal Reserve’s districts, two reported moderate economic growth, three slight growth, four marginal growth, and three little change. Manufacturing performed relatively strongly, but consumer spending changed little in most districts, with more than half saying that consumption was driven mainly by high-income households.
Regarding inflation, three districts reported sharp price increases, eight reported moderate increases, and four said that prices were rising faster than in the previous period. All districts were affected by higher oil prices. High diesel prices and fuel surcharges were driving costs through the supply chain, while tariffs, insurance, and other commodity prices continued to exert pressure. Some businesses expected prices to rise further in the coming months as existing contracts expired and hedging and delivery contracts were renegotiated.
Regarding employment, most districts reported little change in employment levels, but shortages of professional and technical workers and skilled labor persisted. Five districts said that, after some businesses invested in artificial intelligence to improve productivity, they had reduced headcount through natural attrition, delayed hiring, or expected to reduce new positions. At the same time, rising inflation and benefits costs were prompting employees to seek higher wages. The Beige Book noted that most businesses remained positive about the economic outlook for the coming months, but generally expected limited growth and continued pressure from energy prices, tariffs, and other uncertainties.
