Purchased by U.S. police AI How frightening is it? A single washing machine photo can be used to trace a home

Beating Media AI Breaking news: U.S.AI company Graylark's Raven has added indoor geolocation, allowing it to locate a corresponding home using only a photo of a room. In a demonstration, a photo of a washing machine and dryer taken from X was matched within seconds to an Airbnb rental in Charlotte, U.S. A bathroom photo led to a Vrbo property in California. 404 Media found that the property names returned by the system did correspond to real rental listings. In another demonstration, Raven used Zillow property photos to find the exact address of a residence in San Francisco from a single indoor photo.

Raven was formerly known as GeoSpy. Previously, it mainly determined where photos were taken based on outdoor features such as buildings and vegetation; it can now search for specific properties. It does not require photos to include GPS information, nor does it depend on finding an identical image. The system compares details such as room layouts, beams and columns, and tiles to find the same property among listing photos on platforms including Airbnb, Vrbo, and Zillow, then associates it with location information. Graylark says its short-term rental search covers millions of listings worldwide, while street-address searches for ordinary residences are supported only in some cities.

This means that even if a listing platform conceals the exact address, indoor photos may still expose the property's location. Airbnb said that it removes geolocation data from photos; only guests with confirmed bookings can see the full address, and it has never worked with Graylark. The platform's rules also prohibit scraping data.

This year,February,404 Media confirmed through internal police emails that the Los Angeles Police Department and the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office have both purchased the tool. Graylark hopes to use it in cases such as human trafficking, but its actual effectiveness is not yet as certain as the promotional videos suggest. Miami-Dade police previously said that testing remained primarily exploratory and had not produced any major investigative breakthroughs or arrests.
