Amp gives AI Agent a cloud Mac: 30-second startup, compiling and testing iOS apps independently

According to Beating AI's breaking news,AI coding tool Amp has launched macOS Satellites, enabling AI Agent—which previously ran in a cloud-based Linux environment—to call on a Mac as needed to automatically compile, run, and test iOS and macOS apps.

The cloud Mac comes preinstalled with Xcode and simulators, and the company says it starts in about 30 seconds. The Agent continues modifying code on Linux and calls the Mac only when compilation and testing are needed. Test screens, logs, and recordings are sent back to Amp, and users can also take over the Mac desktop directly to operate the app themselves.

Amp previously tried running the entire Agent on a Mac, but Docker and backend services took several minutes to start, while reserving Mac disk space for every task was too expensive. It now assigns the work between machines: Linux handles routine development, while the Mac handles only tasks that must depend on macOS.

Cloud Macs are available in configurations: 6 cores with CPU、14GB memory at 2 USD;12 cores, 28GB memory at 4 USD per hour. After a task ends, the Mac is retained for 20 minutes so users can continue using the compilation cache. Usage is still billed during this period, after which the Mac is automatically destroyed. The feature is currently in the Beta phase, and users must join the waitlist.
