AI Bubble concerns triggered safe-haven buying, pushing Treasury yields down to 3 a weekly low
BlockBeats reported that October 15, the U.S.September CPI rose month-on-month by 0.6%and year-on-year by 3.7%, both above expectations, but Treasuries did not face a sell-off. On Thursday, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield fell by as much as 8.4 basis points to 5.105%, reaching a 3 weekly low. Continued declines in AI technology stocks and rising related credit risks drove funds back into Treasuries, outweighing rate-hike concerns stemming from hotter inflation.
Market concerns are spreading from excessive valuations of AI stocks to the debt-financing model for data-center construction. Data-center operator CoreWeave's debt financing is close to 48000000000 USD, with yields on some of its bonds rising to approximately 15%to 16%, raising concerns about the debt-servicing capacity of the AI industry chain and private-credit risks.
BlackRock has downgraded U.S. equities to “Neutral,” while upgrading its view on Treasuries and showing a stronger preference for short-term government bonds. Analysts believe recent moves show Treasuries once again displaying safe-haven characteristics when stocks decline, and that the traditional stock-bond hedge relationship may be recovering. However, U.S. inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's 2%target, while fiscal deficits and Treasury supply pressure have not eased. Whether Treasuries' safe-haven function can persist remains to be seen.
