Moderna CEO Bullish on expanding personalized cancer vaccines beyond melanoma

BlockBeats reported that October 27, according to Bloomberg, Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said that the company's personalized mRNA cancer vaccine developed in collaboration with Merck could potentially be used for multiple cancers beyond melanoma. However, this remains the company's assessment of the product's potential; whether the vaccine can demonstrate efficacy in other cancer types still requires validation through clinical trials.

The vaccine is customized based on the genetic information of a patient's tumor and is intended to help the immune system identify and attack cancer cells. Currently, related research has expanded to kidney, lung, and bladder cancer. Results previously announced by Moderna and Merck from a melanoma trial showed that the vaccine helped reduce the risk of cancer recurrence, but some investors remain on the sidelines, watching to see whether this effect can be replicated in other cancer types.

Bancel said that the kidney cancer trial could be the next development to watch, with relevant data potentially released between the end of this year and early next year. He also said that the company is working to improve the production efficiency of personalized vaccines. The vaccine's ultimate efficacy in other cancer types and its ability to be produced at scale remain subject to validation through subsequent data and research and development progress.
