Nearly stolen from Uranium Finance 55000000 USD Hacker found guilty, faces up to 20 years in prison

BlockBeats reports that October 8, according to Bloomberg, cybersecurity consultant Jonathan Spalletta was found guilty by a New York jury of stealing nearly 55000000 USD. Prosecutors accused him of carrying out two attacks in 2021; the platform shut down after the funds were stolen. The jury reached its verdict after deliberating for more than hours.

Spalletta faces up to 20 years in prison for money laundering involving the use of crypto-mixing services such as Tornado Cash. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff set the sentencing date for February 16. Law enforcement officials seized rare Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards worth more than 3000000 USD at his Maryland residence, along with approximately 31000000 USD in crypto assets.

Prosecutors said he also spent more than 600000 USD to purchase an ancient Roman coin commemorating Caesar’s assassination, and paid 137000 USD for an original component of a Wright brothers aircraft that Armstrong had taken to the Moon. His defense attorneys argued that he merely used publicly available functions in smart contracts, rather than forging credentials or using malicious code, and that this therefore did not constitute hacking.
