[Chinese police open an investigation into companies related to CreditEase; its funds previously participated in financing for crypto projects including Circle and Figure]

The Chaoyang Branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau issued a police notice stating that it has recently opened an investigation, in accordance with the law, into suspected illegal and criminal activities by companies related to Chinese fintech firm CreditEase. At present, the actual controllers, Mr. Tang (male, 53 years old), Ms. Zhao (female, 51 years old), and several other criminal suspects have been subjected to criminal compulsory measures in accordance with the law. Police stated that they are making every effort to investigate the case and asked investors to actively cooperate with evidence collection, while warning against fraudsters using such pretexts as early repayment. CreditEase is a Chinese fintech company founded by Tang Ning. In its early years, it operated P2P products, and its subsidiary Yirendai was once listed on the NYSE. Since May 22, CreditEase has completely suspended repayments on its quasi-fixed-income products and initiated what it calls an orderly exit, involving approximately 30000000000 yuan and affecting nearly 100000 high-net-worth clients. More than months after the suspension of repayments, CreditEase recently sent clients a letter of apology, acknowledging that the group may be insolvent and faces a substantial repayment shortfall. CreditEase has a broad footprint in wealth management and investment. Public information shows that its funds have directly participated in financing for crypto-related projects including Circle, Figure, Poko, and Cashmere Wallet, and, as LP, invested in multiple traditional VC funds. CreditEase has an entity in Singapore, CreditEase Asset Management (Singapore)Pte. Ltd., which holds a MAS license and is primarily engaged in asset management.
