【Ledger: Criminal syndicate spends millions USD on a hardware implant attack, constituting a localized distribution-channel attack]Ledger released an investigation report on the hardware implant attack, stating that a highly organized criminal syndicate purchased genuine Ledger devices over several months, dismantled them and implanted customized concealed components to steal users' recovery seed phrases when they initialized the devices, before reselling them through Southeast Asian dealer channels. The attackers spent millions USD building infrastructure for seed-phrase collection, asset transfers, and money laundering, and moved victims' assets through coordinated operations.Ledger emphasized that the incident was not caused by a chip, operating-system, or server vulnerability, but was a localized distribution-channel attack that occurred after the devices left the company's control. At present,Ledger has required authorized dealers and distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales, and has conducted spot checks of inventory and devices in retail channels, finding no additional tampered devices. In addition,Ledger has required authorized dealers not to resell any returned devices, even if the packaging is intact; it has also immediately prohibited products from being placed on shelves or in display areas, requiring devices to be stored at the back of stores and handed over at the time of purchase. The company is working with law-enforcement agencies and the security community to trace the stolen funds and will disclose further technical details.
