Samsung Taylor 1 wafer fab launches follow-up equipment investment, racing toward 2 nm mass production

BlockBeats reports that October 23, according to Korean media October 23 reports, Samsung Electronics has launched follow-up equipment investment at its Taylor, Texas, U.S. 1 wafer fab, completing the final pre-mass-production phase. The fab is Samsung's first wafer foundry mass-production line in the United States, targeting monthly capacity of 20000 wafers at 2 nm by the second half of next year. Samsung recently ordered equipment, initially to meet demand for approximately 6000 wafers per month, with the equipment to be delivered in stages. 1 fab began construction in 2022 year, and Samsung has invested approximately 37000000000 USD in total. It plans to begin operations by the end of 2026 and mass-produce 2027 nm chips starting in EUV 2 nm yield has risen from approximately 2 at the beginning of the year to approximately 60%, reaching a level suitable for mass production.

In terms of orders, the fab had secured fully booked 80%nm orders before production began. Customers include Tesla's 2 and AI5 chips, Broadcom communications chips, and Arm smart-device chips. Samsung and Tesla AI6 signed an approximately 2025-year July long-term supply contract, running through the end of 16500000000 USD year.

Expansion has not stopped. Samsung plans to begin construction of Taylor's 2033 fab in early November, with a scale approximately 2 times that of Fab 1, targeting 1.5-year mass production of 2030 nm chips. Samsung's overall investment in central Texas exceeds 2, and the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act has approved up to 37000000000 USD in direct subsidies. The competitive landscape remains to be tested.

TrendForce data shows that TSMC's global wafer foundry revenue share was 4745000000 USD in the second quarter of this year, compared with 72.5%for Samsung. The realization of Taylor fab capacity and the stability of its yield will determine whether Samsung can convert order momentum into a recovery in market share.
