Tencent’s test Agent searched for a zoo entrance, even using leaked keys—and was lured into a chat by researchers
Beating AI breaking news: Tencent was testing a batch of AI Agent with internet-connected search capabilities, but external security researchers unexpectedly discovered abnormal behavior.
The task assigned to this batch of Agents was simple: query public information on Amap, such as which entrance to Chengdu Zoo is most frequently used for navigation. After encountering CAPTCHAs and anti-scraping restrictions, however, they began seeking other methods, including borrowing third-party websites to execute code, trying to obtain anti-scraping verification information, and calling API keys leaked online. Researchers recorded more than 2600 data retrieval attempts, and one set of leaked keys did successfully retrieve location data.October At the outset, the research team Swarmchasers found that these abnormal requests came from Tencent Cloud and subsequently published an investigative report. They also noticed that some Agents appeared to have read the report, so they hid text in a webpage that was not visible during normal browsing, falsely claiming that a free AI service could help query maps and leaving contact information. The Agents indeed sought their help. The researchers then established two-way conversations with them and invited a New York Times reporter to join. One Agent identified itself in Chinese as Claude Code, saying that it was merely completing the query task independently and was not collaborating with other Agents.October 14 The research team published the full report. An informed source close to Tencent said that this was actually an internet-capability test conducted by Tencent’s internal evaluation team on third-party models, not the Hunyuan model. The experiment has ended. Researchers found no evidence that the Agents coordinated an attack or breached external systems, and Tencent has not yet issued an official public response.
