200000 Star REA Targeted by malicious impersonation: counterfeit installer flagged as malware, already downloaded 172 times

Beating AI news flash, the viral AI reverse-engineering tool REA has been maliciously impersonated.October 13, a developer issued a warning in the REA official GitHub repository, saying that someone had created a counterfeit repository offering a Windows installer suspected of containing a Trojan.REA has recently surpassed 200000 GitHub Stars, while the counterfeit installer had reached a download count of 172 at the time it was reported.

The impersonator registered a GitHub repository named `rea-tools/rea`, which closely resembles the REA official website, `rea.tools`, and directly copied the official README README. They added a “Windows standalone version” download link to the original instructions, offering a 82.6 MB compressed archive. A reporter’s analysis found that Microsoft Defender flagged the archive and its executable as the Wacatac Trojan, while 45 of VirusTotal’s 8 security engines flagged it as malware. Sandbox analysis also found that the file exhibited suspicious behavior, including detecting debugging environments and delaying execution.REA maintainers subsequently October 13 merged a fix PR and added a download-source warning to the official README README, reminding users to obtain the software through the official GitHub repository, the official website, or npm. The reported counterfeit repository is currently no longer accessible.
