Anthropic CEO: Company to slow AI R&D progress due to safety concerns
Beating AI news flash: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned at the United Nations Security Council that, without effective management, AI could pose an existential risk to all humanity, and called on countries to establish global AI safety standards.
Amodei attended the Security Council meeting via video on Wednesday and said that AI could be used by malicious actors to create biological weapons, and could ultimately evolve into an out-of-control system that developers cannot control. Due to safety concerns, Anthropic will slow the pace of its AI R&D.
Amodei also called for the establishment of an AI safety certification system and promoted global regulatory cooperation to coordinate countries in preventing AI from being used for biological and chemical weapons. He said that no leader, company, or country can address the challenges brought by AI alone.
Amodei also pointed out that AI is driving progress in the life sciences. Claude, developed by Anthropic, has participated in the discovery of a novel enzyme system containing CRISPR-like DNA repeat sequences, but the related technology could also pose catastrophic risks.
These remarks continue the AI safety position Amodei put forward earlier this month. Anthropic and OpenAI are both at the center of competition in frontier AI models, and their R&D pace and safety policies are also being watched by investors and regulators.
