Anthropic CEO After White House dinner, the tone changes:AI There are risks, but the U.S. wants to “win safely”
Beating AI breaking news, 2 weeks ago, publicly urged the AI industry to “hit the brakes,”Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei clearly changed his tone after having two dinners with Trump. After the White House luncheon, he still acknowledged that AI posed “very real risks,” but no longer mentioned slowing model development. Instead, he echoed Trump by saying, “Whoever wins AI wins.”
Amodei then said that how to address these risks “is still under discussion,” but everyone needs to work together to ensure that the United States can both win and “win safely.” He concluded by adding: “If we work with the president and everyone here, we can win safely.”
This wording was in sharp contrast to 2 weeks earlier. At the time, Amodei wrote directly, “We must slow the pace at which we improve AI model capabilities,” arguing that continuing at the current pace could lead to more serious loss-of-control risks within the next few months. Trump publicly opposed slowing down, saying it would only allow China to catch up with the United States, and called some AI disaster warnings a “hoax.”
The two had previously been at odds, but they shared a table twice this week. Amodei first had dinner alone with Trump on Sunday evening, and 2 days later attended a White House AI luncheon, where he signed a voluntary safety agreement alongside Google, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and Nvidia. The risks remain, slowing down was not mentioned again, and the new keyword has become “win safely.”
