[U.S. Senate investigation Tether payments to Bo Hines-affiliated company]
Richard Blumenthal, the ranking Democrat on the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, wrote on Thursday to Tether and its U.S. subsidiary CEO, as well as Nxum Group, the consulting firm Bo Hines helped found, seeking an explanation of arrangements related to Tether's payments to Nxum. According to The Wall Street Journal, while Bo Hines was still serving as a White House crypto adviser and helping formulate crypto policy, including policy affecting stablecoin issuers, Nxum received substantial payments for providing consulting services to Tether. In a letter to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, Blumenthal said that Tether's highly unusual business relationship with Nxum and Bo Hines, in both its terms and nature, raises serious ethical and legal concerns, suggesting that Tether was likely aware that paying a current White House official directly involved in shaping crypto legislation critical to its business was unlawful and improper.Tether A spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. CoinDesk previously reported that Nxum received millions Tether in revenue as the principal campaign advertising vendor for a political action committee affiliated with USD. The company had little prior political experience and recently also hired another White House crypto adviser, Harry Jung. Blumenthal has recently continued to focus on the crypto sector, including Trump's meme coin, World Liberty Financial, and Binance's activities, particularly Tether. He previously released a report on Tether's financial ties to Iran and questioned its relationship with U.S. financial partner Cantor Fitzgerald. Ardoino criticized Blumenthal this week for overlooking important information and sharing the report with the media before giving the company an opportunity to respond. Prediction market Kalshi shows that the probability of Democrats retaking the Senate is 69%. If Blumenthal takes charge of the subcommittee, he would gain greater subpoena and agenda control.
