Prime Intellect acquires Moondream: fewer than 10 people built a high-speed inference engine

Beating news bulletin,AI valued at 1000000000 USD's AI infrastructure company Prime Intellect announced its acquisition of open-source vision-model company Moondream. The latter's team has fewer than 10 people and had previously raised 4500000 USD. The acquisition amount was not disclosed. The founders will join Prime Intellect, where they will lead research on inference acceleration and multimodal models.

Moondream's models can identify cargo boxes in warehouses, locate products on shelves, and analyze real-time video. The latest Moondream 3.1 has total parameters of 9000000000, with only 2000000000 activated per inference; the entire model family exceeds 5000000 downloads per month. More importantly, however, the key asset in this acquisition is the Photon inference engine. It can consolidate and execute a large number of fragmented GPU operations, reducing hardware wait times. Prime Intellect states that on a single H100, Photon can complete more than 60 Moondream inferences per second, sufficient to support real-time video analysis.

Prime Intellect previously primarily provided Agent training and reinforcement-learning infrastructure, and only launched the Prime Inference platform earlier this October. Following the acquisition, Moondream 3.1 has been integrated into the platform, and Photon has also begun providing inference acceleration for Clef and Clef Flash. The company plans to further apply this technology to video, voice, and computer-operation Agent, enabling enterprises to train, optimize, and deploy multimodal models on a single platform. The Moondream brand will be retained.
