Morgan Stanley: U.S. stock market pullback opens up room for allocation, with strong earnings supporting the appeal of cyclical stocks
BlockBeats news,October 5, Morgan Stanley strategists said that U.S. equity valuations have fallen significantly since early summer, and against a backdrop of still-strong earnings growth, some market sectors are becoming more attractive for investment.
The team led by Michael Wilson said the extent of this pullback has created a “better investment environment” for economically cyclical industries whose fundamental outlook remains sound. The capital goods sector stands out in particular, with its earnings estimate upgrades ranking among the highest across sectors.
Wilson said in a report on Monday: “Following the recent downward revision in valuations, some capital-intensive sectors are beginning to look more attractive.” Since August mid-month, the U.S. stock market rally has slowed somewhat. Rising bond yields offset the boost from a strong earnings season, while companies will begin reporting third-quarter results in the coming weeks, with the market expecting earnings to remain strong.
Bloomberg Intelligence data show that analysts expect third-quarter earnings for S&P 500 index constituents to grow year over year by 25%; second-quarter earnings had previously grown by 34%. Demand for artificial intelligence, record capital expenditures by cloud-computing giants, and a strong macroeconomic environment drove earnings growth.
