Goldman Sachs Earns More Than 200 million USD in Fees from AI Fund “Situational Awareness”

BlockBeats News, September 25: According to the Financial Times, the AI hedge fund “Situational Awareness” became one of the largest hedge fund clients of Goldman Sachs (GS.N)’s prime brokerage business this year, generating more than 200 million USD in fee revenue for Goldman Sachs. According to people familiar with the matter, “Situational Awareness” became an important client of Goldman Sachs’ trading division at one point this year. Its rapid growth and strategy of using borrowing to amplify trading positions drove the increase in fees. When the fund was established, it managed only several hundred million USD in assets. Its returns subsequently exceeded 400% at one point, and its assets under management expanded to more than 20 billion USD. However, AI-related stocks experienced substantial volatility this year, affecting the fund’s large public-market positions, while losses were further amplified by leveraged borrowing.

Founder Leopold Aschenbrenner subsequently sold most of the fund’s equity positions, including assets that had at one point been valued at approximately 16 billion USD and were sold to Citadel. In July, he told investors that he would no longer amplify investments through borrowing in the future. Despite the losses, “Situational Awareness” has maintained its relationship with Goldman Sachs and has begun establishing a trading relationship with technology-stock broker Clear Street.
