Meta and Sierra launch AI Agent a “pass,” with Walmart, Shopify, and others participating in its development
Beating AI reported that customer service Agent company Sierra and Meta jointly launched Personal Agent Protocol(PAP), with Walmart, Shopify, Stripe, Genesys, Instinct, and other companies participating in its development.PAP for individuals AI Agent, enabling companies to verify an Agent’s identity, which user it represents, and what the user has authorized it to do.
Many personal Agents still simulate human interactions with websites. They open websites, click buttons, and fill out forms, making them easy targets for CAPTCHAs and anti-bot systems. Amazon previously prohibited Meta Muse from accessing its shopping website. Even Walmart, a Muse partner, displays human verification that blocks the Agent.PAP aims to standardize this identity and authorization relationship directly. When a user asks an Agent to check an order, they can grant read-only access; modifying an order or placing an order requires separate authorization. Companies can also specify which operations an Agent may perform and whether it connects through a website,API or the company’s own Agent.MCP primarily addresses how Agents call external tools and data, while PAP handles Agent identity, user authorization, and company permissions.PAP is currently in the preview stage, and the first v0.1 specification is planned for release later this month.
On the same 1 day, Sierra’s competitor Decagon also open-sourced a similar PACT protocol and announced that it would join the PAP working group.PACT likewise handles Agent identity and user authorization, using A2A to connect personal Agents with enterprise Agents, and then using OAuth to complete user authorization.
