oMLX Creator Joins Hugging Face: Mac-Based Local AI Goes from a Personal Project to Full-Time Development

Beating AI News Flash: Hugging Face announced that Jun Kim, the creator and maintainer of oMLX, has joined the company and will continue developing oMLX and MLX-related tools on a full-time basis. oMLX is a local large-model inference server designed specifically for Apple Silicon, enabling tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenClaw to directly call models running on a Mac.

oMLX was previously a personal project maintained by Kim in his spare time. After joining Hugging Face, the project will receive funding and full-time development support, but will not be taken over. The code will remain in its original repository and continue to use the Apache 2.0 license, while Kim will remain responsible for the project.

Hugging Face also plans to use oMLX as a testing ground for new MLX capabilities. Mature features will be contributed back to upstream projects such as mlx-lm and mlx-vlm where possible, while accelerating the adaptation of new Transformers models to MLX. In short, oMLX has evolved from a personal project into a long-term project funded by a company, while remaining open source and independent.
