Morgan Stanley employee mistakenly emails file, exposing list of more than 100 potential Asian investment banking transactions

BlockBeats reported on September 24, citing Bloomberg, that a Morgan Stanley employee mistakenly emailed an internal document to some clients this week, inadvertently exposing a list of more than 100 investment banking transactions in Asia that the bank was pursuing or tracking.

The document covered IPO candidates in China, South Korea, India, and other locations. It also included the private equity funds and pension institutions involved in the companies concerned, as well as some projects that had been suspended. The list also covered transactions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with some information containing highly sensitive pricing details.

According to people familiar with the matter, Mohamed Atmani, head of Morgan Stanley's Asia-Pacific financial sponsors group, had intended to send a client-facing version but mistakenly sent the internal version instead, and subsequently attempted to recall the email. Morgan Stanley said it takes the confidentiality of client information very seriously and had acted quickly to address the accidental information-sharing incident.

The incident highlights the high sensitivity of transaction-information confidentiality in investment banking. In recent years, Morgan Stanley has been one of the leading underwriters of Hong Kong equity offerings and a major adviser in the Asian mergers and acquisitions market. It remains unclear whether the clients and transaction parties concerned have contacted the bank about the information leak.
