【White House Crypto Adviser Denies Trump’s Crypto Interests Blocked the Clarity Act】

Patrick Witt, Executive Director of the White House Digital Asset Advisory Council, defended President Trump’s crypto ties on Wednesday at the Financial Markets Quality conference held at Georgetown University, denying that his personal crypto interests caused the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (Clarity Act) to fail to advance in the Senate last week. He said Democrats had politicized the issue and questioned why a recently passed housing bill did not require stringent government ethics-review provisions. Clarity Act negotiations have consistently failed to move beyond an ethics dispute concerning crypto conflicts of interest among senior government officials, with Trump as the principal target. Witt said Trump agreed to unprecedented ethics provisions: in addition to ultimately being willing to accept rules requiring him to divest his crypto assets or place them in a blind trust, the White House was prepared to concede by allowing state attorneys general to sue him if the federal government failed to prosecute ethics violations. He also said it was “rather ironic” to allege that Trump has a conflict of interest by directing digital-asset policy while controlling crypto assets, because multiple senators on the Banking Committee participating in the deliberations hold and actively trade shares of the financial-services companies they regulate. Witt’s primary responsibility is to advance the Clarity Act into law, and the bill encountered setbacks in the Senate last week. At a CoinDesk policy and regulation event on Tuesday, he said the year-end lame-duck session was not the priority, with the current core work shifting to federal regulators such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He also accused banking-industry lobbyists of pushing to shelve the bill over concerns that stablecoin rewards could compete with interest-bearing bank deposits, saying the opposition began with large banks and spread to community banks.
