Codex wrote 1300000 didn't get it done, Claude 2 week port TypeScript compiler
Beating AI Breaking news: renowned developer Theo open-sourced tsc-rs. He had it AI port Microsoft's TypeScript 7 compiler to Rust, covering the compiler, type checker, and language server, with the goal of directly replacing the official tsc. Theo said he did not read a single line of generated code from start to finish.
The project lasted approximately 5 months. Theo initially used tools including Codex, calling multiple OpenAI models to generate more than 1300000 lines of Rust code, but compatibility never exceeded approximately 84%. Based on API list prices, the Token consumed was worth more than 400000 USD.
He later switched to Claude Opus 5.5. The model directly abandoned the previous code and restarted the port from scratch. It produced a runnable initial version in 10 hours, completed the main work within 2 weeks, and the Token consumption, calculated at API prices, was approximately 24000 USD.
Tests show that tsc-rs has passed 181,711 tests ported from Go. In 120 open-source projects, the checking results were broadly consistent with Microsoft's Go version, with only a small number of known behavioral differences. According to performance tests on 60 open-source projects, the Rust version's type checking took approximately half as long on average as the Go version.
