Pi 1.0 Release: Long-running tasks split out into Pi Durable, allowing them to resume after a crash

Beating AI news flash: The Pi development team Earendil has officially released Pi 1.0, while also launching the experimental Pi Durable.

Pi 1.0 primarily formalizes and finalizes capabilities that have recently gone live. The genuinely new product line is Pi Durable. It is an underlying framework for developing long-running Agent; task state is continuously written to storage, so execution can continue after a process crash, container restart, or computer sleep.

Pi Durable breaks model calls and tool calls into recoverable tasks and saves a checkpoint at every step. If a model request is interrupted midway, it can be initiated again. Tools are automatically run again only when it has been confirmed that rerunning them is safe. If tools such as deployment and payment, which may cause duplicate operations, are interrupted, the interrupted state is handed over to the model for handling.

In addition to fault recovery, it supports multiple conversations running simultaneously, saves queued messages and sub-Agent states, and automatically compresses excessively long contexts. Different clients can also connect to the same Agent to view progress or continue issuing instructions.

Earendil has also used this to clearly distinguish the two product lines. Pi Coding Agent continues to retain its form as a single-user terminal tool, while more complex always-on Agent scenarios are handled by Pi Durable. Both use the MIT protocol.

Pi Durable is still an experimental project, and its API may still be adjusted. Once designs have been validated and matured, they will also be brought back to Pi Coding Agent.
