Pi Struck through “No MCP”:MCP officially built in, using Codemode to work around old problems
Beating AI news flash:AI coding tool Pi is officially built into 0.99.0, with MCP. The original “No MCP” on the official website was also struck through directly and changed to “Now with MCP+Codemode」。
Pi did not simply give the model all MCP tools; instead, it added Codemode, allowing the model to write JavaScript to combine and call tools in a sandbox.Pi had previously been publicly opposed to this MCP usage. Last year, its author Mario Zechner found in testing that the Playwright MCP’s 21 tool descriptions consumed approximately 13700 tokens,Chrome DevTools MCP’s 26 tools consumed approximately 18000 tokens. He believed that too many tools both wasted context and were difficult to combine, while tool outputs also had to pass through the model first.
Now Pi has adopted a different integration approach.MCP tools can be exposed only to Codemode, after which the model can use JavaScript to call, combine, and filter results in parallel, sending only the required content back into the context. Tools can also be configured for lazy loading, so they do not all need to be declared to the model at the outset.Pi’s team Earendil has not withdrawn its earlier criticism either. It believes that many MCP Servers still put large numbers of tools and textual results into the context, and the tool-composition problem has not been completely solved.
It is simply that MCP itself is changing, and Pi has also found an integration approach better suited to itself: retaining MCP’s general-purpose interface while using Codemode to avoid the usage pattern it found most objectionable in the past.
