[Beijing police crack cross-border telecom fraud case: scammers impersonated police and induced international students to transfer funds to exchange for U coins, freezing funds involved in the case totaling 780000 yuan]
Beijing's Shijingshan police recently successfully intercepted a new type of cross-border telecom fraud case, freezing funds involved in the case totaling 780000 yuan and returning them to the victim. In the case, Mr. Liu, aged 53, received an overseas scam call while accompanying a student abroad. The scammers impersonated domestic police, fabricated false allegations that he was involved in money laundering and other crimes, and induced him to urgently ask his family in China for money and transfer it. The funds were subsequently transferred into the accounts of other Chinese international students overseas. Investigators found that all were victims of the same fraud ring, displaying characteristics of “multiple scams within one case, with victims serving as money-laundering tools for one another.” The scammers first transferred funds into some victims' accounts, then coerced them into exchanging them for U coins to assist with transfers, making the scheme highly concealed and its cross-border chain complex. Police successfully “awakened” the victim through patient persuasion, preventing greater losses.
