【Canada’s “Crypto King” Pleterski fraud case sent to jury for deliberation】

The criminal case involving Aiden Pleterski, who called himself Canada’s “Crypto King,” over a digital-asset Ponzi scheme will be sent to the jury for deliberation after closing arguments concluded this week. Presiding Judge Shaun Nakatsuru has given the jury its final instructions, and deliberations are scheduled to begin Thursday. Pleterski is accused of defrauding his social-media followers of approximately 2021 years to 2022 years, obtaining approximately 30000000 USD and was charged with fraud in 2024 and subsequently awaited trial for more than 2 years. In closing arguments, Pleterski maintained that he was innocent. He said: “I am innocent of these charges, which is why I pleaded not guilty. That would have been proven had I not been forced to defend myself. That is all I have to say.” Because he chose to represent himself, he acted as his own counsel in court. If convicted of fraud, he could face up to 14 years in prison. In a separate criminal case, five men were accused of kidnapping and torturing Pleterski in 2022; some were reportedly victims of his scheme. Defendant Deren Akyeam-Pong has pleaded guilty to nine charges and is awaiting sentencing. Pleterski is one of several figures in the cryptocurrency industry to stand trial on fraud charges; former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was convicted in 2023 and is serving 25 years in prison in the United States.
