Vercel Add persistent background execution to the Agent: tasks can continue processing, and files are not lost when the sandbox is destroyed
Beating AI news flash:Vercel launched at Ship 2026 the developer conference Daemons, allowing developers to deploy long-running background processes directly. It can continuously retrieve tasks from a message queue or database, process one task before taking the next, and automatically restart after a process crash. Previously,Vercel mainly executed code on request, so developers often needed to deploy a separate background service to run long-running tasks.Daemons is now in beta.
Another update is the official availability of Drives, providing AI Agent with persistent file storage. Previously, files in a temporary sandbox disappeared when it was closed. Now, the Agent can save code, data, and work products in independent storage and continue using them when a new sandbox is started next time. Developers can also duplicate workspaces, allowing multiple Agents to start from the same files and process different tasks in parallel without overwriting one another's changes.Vercel has also added MCP Events to Connect, allowing Agents to subscribe to events from external systems. For example, when a new Issue appears on GitHub or a document receives a new comment, a compatible MCP service can proactively send a notification, prompting the application to trigger the Agent for processing without repeatedly checking for new tasks. This feature is still in beta and requires external service support for event subscriptions.
These updates also expand the business scope of Vercel. Developers who previously mainly used it to deploy websites can now put long-running background tasks, Agent workspaces, and event integrations together on Vercel, reducing the work required to build and maintain additional infrastructure.
