Utah, United States brings Kalshi felony charges against and its two co-founders over sports prediction markets
BlockBeats News,October 29, Utah, United States has brought charges against prediction market platform Kalshi and its co-founders,CEO Tarek Mansour and COO Luana Lopes Lara, including count of second-degree felony pattern of unlawful activity, 12 counts of third-degree felony online prediction promotion, and misdemeanor count of prediction market promotion. Prosecutors said state investigators posed as Utah residents and September made predictions on Kalshi regarding 12 sporting events and passed geolocation verification. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown said that betting, operating, or promoting such activities is illegal in the state, and relabeling them as prediction markets or obtaining federal registration does not override state law.Kalshi responded that the move was a “wild overreach,” that Utah was clearly playing politics, and that it would stop the action in court, as it did in Arizona. The case came day after the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued Utah in an attempt to prevent it from enforcing against federally regulated trading platforms.
