Meta joins forces with Fourier Intelligence 3 months to build a humanoid robot prototype, aiming to equip Muse with hands and feet

Beating AI Breaking news: Meta partnered with Shanghai-based Fourier Intelligence and took only 3 months to build the humanoid robot prototype Max. Max was developed based on the hardware and technological foundation accumulated through Fourier Intelligence's first generations of humanoid robots. Meta primarily adjusted the body's proportions, head design, and cameras, and added components such as hands. Meta's vice president of robotics products also spent nearly 2 months at Fourier Intelligence's Shanghai factory, completing an internal demonstration by the end of August.

When Meta established its robotics team last year, it wanted to create the “Android” of robotics: develop its own AI software so that robots from different manufacturers could use it.CTO Bosworth noted at the time that getting robots to run and jump is no longer the hardest part; the real bottleneck is fine manipulation. For example, when picking up a glass of water, a robot must neither crush the glass nor spill the water. This requires AI to understand the physical world and precisely control force and movement.

The partnership with Fourier Intelligence allows Meta to conduct such experiments faster without developing the robot body from scratch. Max is approximately 1.5 meters tall, equipped with an NVIDIA Jetson Thor chip, and its five-fingered hands can pick up small bottles and toys. The two parties September then launched Max 2, focusing on improving bimanual manipulation and stair-climbing capabilities.

Meta hopes to eventually give Muse AI agents bodies, enabling them to enter homes and complete real-world tasks.
