Bitcoin Core is adjusting its security policy, and some vulnerabilities will be fixed and disclosed immediately
BlockBeats reported that October 23,Bitcoin Core is adjusting its security vulnerability disclosure policy because large language models (LLM) have significantly lowered the barrier to discovering some software vulnerabilities.Bitcoin Core Developer Antoine Poinsot said on Thursday on the Bitcoin developers' mailing list that, for vulnerabilities easily discovered through a simple LLM prompt, delayed disclosure is no longer able to provide sufficient protection and instead delays the release of fixed versions.
Under the new policy, for vulnerabilities that are easy to discover,Bitcoin Core will release fixes as soon as possible for all major versions that are still maintained and publish security advisories at the same time. Other vulnerabilities will still be disclosed in stages according to severity: low-severity vulnerabilities will be made public 2 weeks after the release of the major version containing the fix; medium- and high-severity vulnerabilities will generally be disclosed 2 weeks after the last affected version reaches end of maintenance. Critical vulnerabilities that seriously affect Bitcoin's fundamental security will follow a separate process.AI AI-assisted security research is placing new pressure on the Bitcoin ecosystem. This year,August the Bitcoin Red Team reported finding nearly 390 potential issues across 5000 projects; Core Lightning developers also urged node operators to upgrade their software or temporarily take it offline after receiving multiple vulnerability reports generated by AI. The policy adjustment aims to shorten the exposure window for easily exploitable vulnerabilities and accelerate the delivery of fixed versions.
