Vercel Long-lived API keys face the axe: labeled “insecure” at year-end, removed next year
Beating AI News reports that Vercel has announced that it will phase out long-lived static keys in its own Marketplace.November 30 onward, third-party services that still rely on long-lived keys and do not support Vercel OIDC authentication will be marked “insecure.” From 2027 onward,January service providers that do not offer secure authentication will be delisted.Vercel Its own API and native integrations must also meet the same standard.
Long-lived keys are like keys that never expire automatically. Developers often put them in environment variables, allowing applications or AI agents to access databases and other services. Once leaked, attackers may be able to use them for an extended period.Vercel-promoted OIDC allows programs to obtain short-lived credentials through their own identities while limiting access scope and permissions. After credentials expire,SDK can automatically obtain new ones and reduce extra requests through caching. Developers no longer need to repeatedly replace keys manually.Vercel has also learned this lesson the hard way. This year,April third-party AI tool Context.ai was compromised, allowing attackers to penetrate Vercel internal systems and read some customers’ environment variables. The company did not announce completion of all remediation until October 16.Vercel also disclosed that past key rotations had consumed thousands of engineering hours.Vercel surveyed more than 1000 SaaS providers and found that only 8.4%supported more secure authentication methods. Long-lived keys became widespread because they are simple to use. Short-lived credentials are more secure, but they are more complex to configure and may also increase network-request latency.Vercel is reducing these costs through SDK and automatic caching, then using Marketplace listing eligibility to pressure service providers to change their authentication methods.
