Google will send 4 satellite TPU into space,October 1 launched aboard SpaceX

Dongcha Beating AI Flash: Google is preparing to send the first experimental satellite for Project Suncatcher, its “space AI data center” research project, into low Earth orbit. It will launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission, bringing TPU into a real space environment for testing for the first time.

The satellite is being developed with the participation of Planet. It is approximately refrigerator-sized and carries 4 satellites TPU. It is not yet a complete “space data center”; its primary purpose is to test whether the chips can withstand launch vibrations, space radiation, and extreme temperatures.

There is no air in space, making heat dissipation another challenge.TPU can run continuously for only about 15 minutes each time, after which it needs to stop and cool down.

Project Suncatcher’s long-term goal is to send satellites carrying large numbers of TPU into space, then interconnect them at high speed using lasers to form a distributed AI data center. Google plans to launch two more satellites in 2027 for testing inter-satellite links.
