【U.S. Democratic Party investigation Meta into the inclusion of data center construction in tax credits】

A Democratic senator on tax matters said Wednesday that Meta may have misused a tax incentive commonly used by businesses, and demanded that the company explain in detail why it applied for research tax credits while building data centers. Lawmakers want to determine whether Meta which owns Facebook and Instagram, improperly claimed the tax incentive. The policy was originally intended to support research and experimental technology, not subsidize ordinary business expenditures. The New York Times previously reported that Meta used the credit to reduce its tax liability by tens of billions USD, prompting the joint letter. Senate Finance Committee Ranking Democrat and Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, along with six other Democratic members of the committee, said in a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg: The federal research tax credit is an effective and necessary tool for supporting the U.S. innovation economy and cutting-edge research, but subsidizing your construction of artificial intelligence data centers plainly does not meet this standard. The lawmakers also noted that Meta attempting to characterize artificial intelligence data center expansion projects as eligible for the research tax credit could constitute a major improper application of federal tax law and warrants further investigation. The joint letter was signed by Wyden and six other Democratic members of the Senate Finance Committee. One signatory, Vermont Senator Peter Welch, also wrote to IRS Commissioner Frank Bisignano last week, requesting that the tax agency provide information on how Meta and other large technology companies use research and experimentation (R&E) tax credits.
