AI Commercialization faces a reality check: 1%Customers contribute nearly half of Anthropic’s revenue,Token usage is growing, but spending has stagnated
Beating AI flash news, Ramp tracked payment data from more than 70000 U.S. companies and found that approximately 80%of enterprise revenue for Anthropic and OpenAI comes from top customers representing just 1%of the total customer base,AI indicating a clear trend toward customer concentration in commercialization.August and September, enterprise Token spending has grown for 2 consecutive months with almost no growth,October reaching a record high in early August but only 1.5%above its peak.
Falling prices are a major reason for the stagnation in spending growth. Ornn data shows that Anthropic’s actual Token price index fell from September in mid-1.70 USD to below 0.83 USD, a decline of more than 50%; the corresponding index for OpenAI was 0.45 USD. According to YipitData, Anthropic’s top 1%customers August contributed 46%of revenue, up from 1 25%years ago.
Meanwhile, enterprise AI paid adoption is slowing. Ramp data shows that September enterprise AI paid adoption rose by just 0.62 percentage points to 55.9%. Ramp Chief Economist Ara Kharazian believes that AI market growth is shifting from expanding the base of paying users to increasing usage depth among existing users.
Goldman Sachs warned that Token demand growth must exceed the decline in prices to support sustained investment in computing capacity. Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok also noted that enterprises are highly sensitive to computing prices, and lower prices may not generate sufficient incremental demand. Goldman Sachs data shows that the realized return on invested capital of Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle fell from 40%to 25%, the lowest level since 2016 years ago.
These data challenge the “Jevons paradox” on which the AI industry has placed high hopes: whether declining computing costs can generate higher revenue through demand growth remains to be verified. As customer concentration increases, prices fall, and paid penetration approaches saturation,AI enterprises’ ability to convert Token consumption into actual revenue, profit growth, or cost savings will be key to assessing the return on investment in AI infrastructure.
