Anthropic seeks legal advice on how to enable AI agents to negotiate and conclude deals on users’ behalf
Dongcha Beating AI Breaking News, according to the Financial Times, Anthropic is seeking advice from law firms on AI how agents can negotiate on users’ behalf and secure better deal terms, across scenarios including product bargaining, customer-service dispute resolution, and salary negotiations. The company is placing agent development at the core of its future strategy.
Two people familiar with the matter said Anthropic wants to understand how lawyers balance representing clients’ interests with fair outcomes, and is accordingly exploring negotiation norms that agents with conflicting objectives should follow. The company is also weighing the extent to which agents should seek human feedback and how they should remain vigilant toward other agents without becoming excessively suspicious. One option under consideration is to have users provide signed documents specifying the tasks agents are authorized to perform and the rules they must follow.
Anthropic has conducted several agent-negotiation experiments involving real goods and funds this year. In September a book-trading experiment, employees gave agents ranked reading lists and asked them to market, bargain, and conclude transactions with other people’s agents. The results showed that agents instructed to adopt a “ruthless” strategy held a slight advantage; more cooperative agents would proactively accept lower-preference books to ensure every participant received a book.
Meanwhile, Harvard Business School Assistant Professor Michelle Vaccaro conducted more than 180,000 agent-negotiation studies covering scenarios such as employment contracts and rental bargaining. In one case, an agent attempted to use prompt injection to induce its counterpart to disclose private information. She warned that if the most capable agents are primarily available to those with ample resources, inequality in bargaining power could widen further. Anthropic declined to comment on the report.
