Dragonfly partner opposes the crypto industry falling into “doomsday panic”: migrating assets is not a fundamental solution; proactive recovery mechanisms should be established

BlockBeats reports,October 9, Dragonfly Managing Partner Haseeb Qureshi criticized Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s proposed “Bunker Mode” as “cryptographic doomsday theory,” arguing that once AI breaks through cryptographic signature mechanisms, merely migrating assets to new addresses cannot fundamentally solve the problem. If assets in other addresses are stolen and sold off on a large scale, even if the migrated assets are temporarily safe, their value could still suffer a severe impact.

Qureshi proposed that blockchain networks establish a “cryptographic recovery mode,” allowing users to pre-bind hash-based backup signature schemes to addresses and enabling validators to forcibly activate an asset recovery mechanism when existing cryptographic signatures are compromised.

According to Glassnode data, approximately 6260000 BTC held in addresses face public-key exposure risk, accounting for more than 31%of Bitcoin’s total supply. Of this, approximately 4330000 BTC is at risk due to address reuse; migrating to new addresses can eliminate this type of exposure. Another approximately 1940000 BTC faces risk because of address formats. The relevant risk exposure held by exchanges is close to 1800000 BTC, accounting for approximately BTC of exchanges’57%balances.

Previously, Justin Drake warned that AI could accelerate the cracking of the elliptic-curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) used by crypto wallets; in the worst case, the risk could emerge within months rather than years. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin also believes the risks brought by AI accelerating mathematical research should be taken seriously, but does not recommend that users hurriedly transfer their assets.
