⚡️Analysis: Sharp pullback in gold and silver, while supply-demand imbalances continue to support the outlook for precious metals
According to BlockBeats,October 17, the spot gold price has, since this year,January reached a record high of 5608 USD per ounce, fallen by approximately 27%to around 4112 USD; silver also fell from its January high of 121.62 USD to around 56 USD, a decline of more than 50%. However, the sharp price decline has not eased supply pressures in the physical market.
World Gold Council data show that 2026 global central-bank gold purchases in the second quarter of 288.9 reached 62%tonnes, the highest level on record for the same period, up year-on-year by 2026. Meanwhile, the Silver Institute expects that the global silver market supply deficit in 46300000 will widen to ounces, marking a sixth consecutive year of supply deficits, while mine supply growth remains relatively limited.
The demand structure is also changing. Although silver consumption in the photovoltaic sector is expected to continue declining, demand growth in data centers, electric vehicles, grid upgrades, and other sectors may partially offset the impact of lower photovoltaic silver consumption. Meanwhile, mine development cycles are long, making it difficult for new supply to respond rapidly to changes in demand.
This round of gold and silver price corrections may reflect the unwinding of speculative positions more than a complete easing of physical supply-demand imbalances. The US fiscal deficit, rising interest expenses, and central banks' demand to diversify reserves may also continue to provide long-term support for gold. However, changes in trade policy, weaker industrial demand, and the release of new mining capacity could still alter market trends.
