Karpathy:6000000000 people have barely used them AI, with only 5000 people having access to top internal models
Andrej Karpathy, who currently works on the Anthropic pre-training team, again discussed the public's perception gap regarding AI capabilities. In his view, this gap is widening, evolving from groups talking past each other into an increasingly steep funnel.
By his rough estimate, approximately 6000000000 people globally (75%) have had almost no exposure to large language models. Around 1000000000 to 2000000000 people only occasionally use free chatbots, treating AI as a search or writing tool. Further up, around 20000000 people (0.2%) use frontier models in professional fields such as programming and mathematics. They have already seen complex projects that previously required weeks or even months now be completed by Agent.
At the very top are approximately 5000 people (0.00006%). They can access the most advanced internal AI systems. The frontier capabilities described by Karpathy include thousands of Agent working together continuously for weeks, automatically discovering zero-day vulnerabilities, conducting cyber offense and defense at machine speed, and advancing mathematical research. He believes humans are already beginning to fall behind in reviewing and understanding these outputs.
Karpathy attributes the gap to factors: users face problems of different scales;AI advances faster in fields such as programming and mathematics where results are easier to verify; and there are differences in capability and access barriers among free versions, paid versions, and internal systems. Ordinary people may still see AI merely as a chatbot that frequently makes mistakes, while a small group of professionals has already begun assigning it large-scale projects.
