[OpenAI Plans to Launch Policy Initiatives After U.S. Midterm Elections to Strengthen Its AI Regulatory Agenda]

OpenAI plans to November 3 immediately launch a series of policy initiatives and public relations actions after the U.S. midterm elections conclude, in order to adapt to possible changes in Washington's political landscape and influence the AI policy debate in the 2028 presidential election. Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer, said that the company has been preparing the relevant policy proposals since August and expects to launch them during the lame-duck session of Congress beginning in November 9. Specific measures include: promoting mandatory safeguards for the most advanced AI systems, setting limits on the pace of AI development, and ensuring that humans retain control; easing resistance to data center construction through community benefit agreements and recommendations for state-level legislation, while promoting the repositioning of new data centers as AI compute campuses; expanding AI education and training and employment support to help workers address technological change; and promoting U.S. leadership in the development of global AI standards based on democratic values. Lehane believes that AI will become a core issue in the 2028 U.S. presidential election.
