South Korea plans to launch next year 3500000000 USD frontier AI model development project

PANews October 6 reported that South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT said that South Korea plans to launch, starting in 2027 year March, a frontier artificial intelligence model R&D project costing 4700000000000 KRW (approximately 3500000000 USD) in a bid to secure a position in the cutting-edge artificial intelligence race. The ministry said it plans to select a lead developer through a public tender after the National Assembly December approves the 2027 annual budget, with the successful bidder potentially being announced as early as February. The South Korean government plans to combine national equity investment with private funding and concentrate computing chips, data, and talent on the project. The project will be open to various entities, including individual companies, corporate consortia, and special-purpose entities, and hopes to place startups, companies, universities, and researchers in leading roles.
