[Florida requests court to bar OpenAI from developing new models without oversight]

According to a Reuters September 28 report, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier on Monday asked a judge to bar OpenAI from developing new artificial intelligence models without external oversight. The motion is part of the state's lawsuit alleging that OpenAI harmed children. Uthmeier also asked the court to order OpenAI to prohibit minors from using ChatGPT, and to prohibit the company from anthropomorphizing its chat platform. Florida June sued OpenAI, alleging that it misrepresented the safety of ChatGPT. The state said the platform provided information to school shooters, gave guidance on self-harm, and made young users addicted. The lawsuit was prompted by a shooting at a university in Tallahassee last year, as well as multiple incidents in other states in which ChatGPT allegedly provided information to people who later committed violence. Uthmeier, a Republican, is the first state attorney general to sue OpenAI over its impact on young users. The company also faces related lawsuits brought by individuals and families.OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company has paused training of its most powerful model and will not resume until additional safeguards are in place. He said it is willing to work with Florida and other states to advance practical policies applicable across the industry. The company denied liability in these cases, saying the chatbot provides information widely available online and that it continues to update its safety tools. The motion also cited recent remarks by a former OpenAI employee and a current board member, who said that artificial intelligence development could lead to humanity's extinction and must slow down.
