Chroma joins Replit: cloud service 60 will shut down within days, while the open-source database remains available
Beating AI news flash: Chroma, the company behind the open-source vector database ChromaDB, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with Replit and will join it.ChromaDB mainly helps AI retrieve relevant information from large volumes of documents, with approximately 6000000 downloads per month and nearly 30000 GitHub stars.Replit also valued Chroma’s enterprise-grade AI Agent memory system Foundation, developed this year. It can read work records from Codex and Claude Code, as well as Slack messages, and use background Agents to extract problems the team has solved and accumulated experience, while continuously updating the enterprise knowledge base. Different Agents can share this knowledge instead of starting from scratch each time.Replit hopes to use this to establish enterprise-grade AI Agent context and memory infrastructure.
The two sides had actually crossed paths much earlier. 2023 had already collaborated in AI to launch an application development template, and Replit CEO Amjad Masad and President Michele Catasta were also early investors in Chroma.
However, Chroma’s existing cloud service will shut down directly.November 22 will stop accepting writes and become read-only;December 22 will stop accepting reads. Existing customers need to complete data migration before then. The open-source ChromaDB will continue to use the Apache 2.0 license, and some code that was originally closed source has also been opened,Replit has pledged to continue contributing code to the open-source project.
